Layoffs are actually way down, Verity is crushing it, and I'm soft launching a secret announcement
Plus: a $499 body scan and my sick day survival cart
Anne Hathaway and Colleen Hoover took down Tom Cruise at the box office, everyone wants to quit but no one’s quitting, and I spent the weekend filming something I'm not allowed to tell you about (I'm suffering).
Let's get into it.

25,000 New Yorkers are on a waitlist to get scanned by the Spotify guy
Neko Health, the body scan startup co-founded by Spotify's Daniel Ek, just opened its first U.S. clinic in SoHo. For $499 and about an hour, they check your heart, blood, skin, and metabolic health, then a clinician walks you through the results before you leave. Doctors have concerns about scans like this flagging harmless stuff that sends people spiraling, and as someone who has WebMD'd a headache into a funeral, I hear them. I will also be joining the waitlist.
A third of us want to quit but there's nowhere to go
Nearly 1 in 3 employees plan to look for a new job in the next year, in a market that Fortune is calling brutal. Layoffs are at a four-year low, so the good news is you're probably not getting fired, and the bad news is neither is the person whose job you want. The top reasons people want out are no clear path up and no idea where their company is headed.
Anne Hathaway beat Tom Cruise at the box office and it was not even a little close
Colleen Hoover fans (and haters): YSK that Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, opened at #1 this weekend with $32.6 million!! Tom Cruise's new movie Digger made $8 million on a budget north of $125 million, and the reviews were rough enough that Warner Bros. ran ads telling people to "decide for yourself" (bleak!). Critics didn't love Verity either tbh… but it's already pulled in about $62 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, so I doubt anyone involved is losing sleep. Women will show up to a theater for a messy book adaptation. We will! Every time!

I spent the weekend filming at Stanford, which as a Notre Dame grad felt a little like sneaking into enemy territory (I have NOT switched teams, please don't revoke my alumni status). We shot on campus and at a few spots around San Francisco for something I can't talk about yet, which is going great for me as a person who has never once kept a secret. My lips are sealed and my group chat is furious. All I can say is: December. Consider this my official announcement that an announcement is coming!!!

Shoutout to the rando over my mom’s shoulder

Still recovering from being sick (send help, send soup), so I dressed head to toe in grey to match how I feel. The burgundy loafers are carrying both this outfit and my will to answer emails (sort of) (not really).

Being sick is so much worse when you also have to make decisions, and I say this as someone who spent last week trying to order soup with a fever and gave up halfway through.
The actual hack, since (sorry!) you probably will get sick this fall/winter: build a sick day cart. Open whatever delivery app you already use, add soup, electrolytes, tissues, cough drops, and the good crackers, then save it as a list so sick you only has to hit reorder. While you're at it, write your sick day OOO now and save it as an email template (two sentences, no apologizing, name who's covering). Drafting a professional message with a 101-degree fever is how typos end up in front of your VP.
Then book your flu shot, which takes about two minutes on most pharmacy apps and is usually free with insurance. And since it's October, check your FSA balance, because a lot of plans wipe it at the end of the year, and cold medicine, thermometers, and pain relievers all count.
Wish I'd done literally any of this two weeks ago!
